A Steady Situation 3, Part 9

He kissed her neck.

I love the way your hair catches the light through the windows in here. It kind of looks like a glossy tapestry streaming over your back and the covers. Which reminds me, someone came to the door the other day to say they think the river’s clogged because not much water’s finding its way downstream. I kind of thought I might take a look, and if there’s a dead tree or something barricading the flow I could go apply some elbow grease and shift it. But, then, I’d probably be out most of the day because, obviously, I don’t know what the problem could be- like, a landslide, and I’d need to go to the authorities for that, with the villages down the way that need the river for their clothes-washing and drinking and all that, so I’ll make a few meals for you and maybe something to pack for myself. What’d you feel like? You seem to like spicy stuff at the moment, which is good for me, because that’s definitely an old time favourite for me, right back to the bad old days, actually. Sometimes we got street food in, but I think I’ve already told you that. Anyway, so what would you like?

She turned around, and cleared her throat.

We still have to do our taxes today.
