They always tried to eat at the same time together during the evenings. The aroma of wine held them in a comfortable torpor, and despite all the vagaries of the day, this moment was set aside for them to simply enjoy the other’s company.

Have you got any more teaching work lined up?

Actually, I’ve got some time to focus on my own weaving for a while.

Does that mean you might be able to take some time off?

Maybe. What for?

Well, I’ve got this work outing to size up adding some stuff to a stadium, and I’m supposed to watch some games, and I was wondering if you could come with?

The candlelight cast a shadowplay against the walls, but was now still.

I really would want to, but I don’t know how I’ll be at a stadium.

It’s alright, I’ll get through it.

He brought his fork up to his mouth, and then lowered it again.

Maybe I can come. I can probably bring some food, too.

She sized him up for a moment. To most other people he would be smiling naturally, but she could see the nervous intent to hold an encouraging demeanor.

Look, no, it’s fine, doing it by myself is no problem.

She waited for him to respond and continue eating but he just held her gaze in a way she perceived as troubled. She decided to get up and give him a hug.

Conversation over. Start eating again. If you really need it, I can feed you myself.
