A Steady Situation 2, Part 11

Glimmering crystal light streamed through the windows. For some reason consciously unknown to them both, the room felt somehow pleasantly fuller than it was. Last night was a pristine clear glass blur.

Although they had fallen asleep in an embrace, they were for some time scarcely aware that the other was awake.

The ‘hello’ was nice in the right way. They were touching, so there was little indecision about gentle caress.

Before long, he brought the question of breakfast up. She hardly knew she was hungry, but that wasn’t unusual. Reluctantly, she said he could get started, and kissed him gently on the cheek.

A few minutes passed, and she took in a deep sigh, passing her hand through the light-cascade. Scratching her face, she stumbled over to the wardrobe to put her nightclothes on.

She could begin to hear the crackling of oil and water in a pan as she descended the stairs. An altogether new and novel experience: it was morning, and she was alone with just the one other person in the house.

She very quietly opened the kitchen door. He briefly looked at her, and smiled.

No need to smile back. He didn’t care about that. It’s one of the things that she liked about him. She could probably go over to him and poke him in the back, and he wouldn’t be upset.

Thinking back to her designs, through all of the various blueprints and formulae, and even the tread of time all of those projects would have to survive through, she felt assured things would be as they were supposed to be.

Perhaps, she thought, she should be trying to talk to him. It seemed nearly impossible, and then she registered that it just wasn’t necessary.
